Why Website Redesigns Go Wrong for Pune Businesses
A website redesign should make your Pune business stronger — better design, faster performance, more leads. But done incorrectly, it can wipe out years of Google rankings built up by your old site, send 404 errors to visitors who click your links, and confuse Google's crawlers into thinking your old content no longer exists.
This 15-point checklist, drawn from ARC Digital Solutions' experience managing website redesigns for Pune businesses, will ensure yours goes smoothly.
Before the Redesign Starts
1. Crawl Your Existing Site
Use a tool like Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs) to export every URL on your current website. This is your baseline — you need to know every page that exists before you redesign so nothing important gets accidentally deleted or left without a redirect.
2. Export Your Current Google Analytics Data
Before you touch a single file, export your traffic data from Google Analytics for the last 12 months. Note which pages get the most traffic. These are your priority pages — they must be preserved or redirected correctly in the redesign.
3. Screenshot Your Current Search Console Rankings
In Google Search Console, export your Performance report (last 3 months) showing which keywords each page ranks for. After launch, you'll compare against this to catch any ranking drops immediately.
4. Audit Your Current Backlinks
Use a free tool like Ahrefs' backlink checker or Google Search Console's Links report to find external websites linking to your old URLs. If those URLs change in the redesign without redirects, you lose all those backlinks — and the Google authority they provide.
During the Redesign
5. Preserve URL Structure Where Possible
The safest redesign keeps the same URLs. If your old page was "/services/web-design" and your new site uses "/services/website-design", Google sees these as two different pages. Keep URLs identical where possible, especially for pages with rankings and backlinks.
6. Implement 301 Redirects for Every Changed URL
For every URL that must change, create a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. A 301 redirect tells Google "this page permanently moved here" and transfers approximately 90% of the ranking power from the old page to the new one.
7. Match or Improve Existing Content
Never delete content that's currently ranking on Google, even if it looks outdated. Migrate the content to the new design with improvements. If a page on your old Pune business website ranks for "chartered accountant Baner Pune", that content must appear on the new site.
8. Maintain Title Tags and Meta Descriptions
Copy your current title tags and meta descriptions into the new site for pages that are currently ranking. Only improve them — never replace them with completely different titles for ranking pages.
9. Build on a Staging Environment
Never build the redesign on your live website. Use a staging environment (a private URL). This allows testing without affecting your live site's Google rankings.
10. Block Search Engines from Staging
Add a "noindex" meta tag to your staging environment. If Google indexes your staging site, it will see duplicate content — identical pages on two different URLs — which triggers duplicate content penalties.
At Launch
11. Verify All 301 Redirects Work
Before going live, use a redirect checker tool to verify every redirect returns a 301 (not 302, not 404). Test each one manually for your most important pages.
12. Submit the New Sitemap to Google Immediately
As soon as the redesigned site is live, go to Google Search Console and submit your new sitemap.xml. This tells Google's crawler about your new URL structure immediately rather than waiting for it to discover changes organically.
13. Request Indexing for Your Priority Pages
Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to request indexing for your top 10 most important pages. This puts them in Google's crawl queue faster.
14. Test Site Speed on Mobile
Run your newly launched site through Google PageSpeed Insights immediately after launch. Target a mobile score above 80. Fix any critical issues before they impact rankings.
15. Monitor Search Console Daily for 30 Days
After launch, check Google Search Console every day for the first month. Watch for: increase in 404 errors (missing redirects), drops in impressions or clicks (ranking loss), coverage errors (pages Google can't index). Catching problems in the first 2 weeks prevents major ranking damage.
